Software license usage

  1. Go to the ALVAO Asset Management Console application and select Software – Overview of licenses and installations.
  2. In the upper list, select the product whose usage you want to view.
  3. In the lower computers list view the Run time for past month (hours) and Run time for past 12 months (hours) columns.
  4. Sort the list based on the "Run time for past month (hours)" column, "Run time for past 12 months (hours)" column respectively, in ascending order. In the beginning of the list you will see the computers where the product was least used, eventually not used at all, during the last calendar month, or year respectively.
Note:
The time when the computer was in private mode is not counted into the application usage time. If the private mode is not enabled, also the time outside working hours is counted.  
Note:
If some of the monitored computers is not connected to the company network or the Internet, the information about the applications usage is saved locally to the computer hard drive and are sent to the ALVAO server next closest time it is connected to the network, or the Internet respectively. If there in ALVAO are the data for the whole last month, 12 months respectively, not yet available, the current run time is displayed in the column along with a "+" character, e.g. "115+".
Note:
The time which the application was running for, is viewed in the mentioned columns. It is not taken into account whether the application was in fact used by the user.
Tip:
When comparing the data of the application usage consider that the product may not be installed on some computers during the whole monitored period, so the information may not be comparable with other computers.

Running software

Some applications usage can not be linked to installed products. It is caused by a fact the application usage time is measured by the exe file run time which may not contain all information required for exact specification of the product. For example, the product edition can not be determined because different edition use the same exe file (Visual Studio, SQL, Server Management Studio).
The usage of product which has not been installed can be measured further. That product could be run e.g. from a USB drive.

Therefore, by the running software we mean:
  • Applications which can not be assigned to a product – running applications without edition recognized and standard Windows applications.
  • Uninstalled products – running portable products (for example, from USB).
By default, the running software is not displayed. You have to enable the Display running software option in the AM Console, in the Tools – Settings window.

The running software is displayed on the Software tab of the specific computer and also the folder. You will know it by the Applications icon and the Executed software value in the Record kind column which you can use for filtering.

Use the following process to find the usage of this software on individual computers:
  1. In the AM Console select the whole organization in the objects tree and go to the Software tab.
  2. Order the upper product list by Product column.
  3. Select the product which usage you want to view. It has the Applications icon and Running Software value in the Record kind column and it should have a name closely similar to the really installed product.
  4. In the lower computers list view the Run time for past month (hours) and Run time for past 12 months (hours) columns.
  5. Sort the list based on the Run time for past month (hours) column, Run time for past 12 months (hours) column respectively, in ascending order. In the beginning of the list you will see the computers where the product was least used, eventually not used at all, during the last calendar month, or year respectively.
