Links between objects

The links defining relationships between individual objects can be created between the objects in ALVAO Asset Management. Thanks to the links it is possible to find which objects (configuration items) are involved in a certain service delivery and how these objects (configuration items) relate to each other. The aim of the links is to support the IT employees when assessing the impact and subsequent priority of the incident, issue, change, or planning an intervention into the infrastructure.

"Links" tab

You can manage the links in the ALVAO Asset Management Console main window, on the Links tab. The tab displays links for the object currently selected from the tree.

Views

In default settings the "Links" tab displays the following views:

  • Direct – displays only the direct links, i.e. links with the start or end object directly selected from the tree.
  • Is used by – displays a list of objects which use the object selected in the tree.
  • Uses – displays a list of objects which are used by the object selected in the tree.

Link types

Between the individual objects can the following link types be defined:

Link type Description
Relates to – Relates to Object A relates to object B.
Is used by – Uses Object A is used by the object B. Example: UPS "UPS1" is used by the server "SERVER1"

Direct and Indirect links

E.g. between the objects A to E there are the following links:
A -> B -> C -> D -> E

If the object C is selected in the objects tree, the links B -> C and C -> D are direct, because they directly come out of or lead into the object C.

The links A -> C and C -> E are indirect, because the object A is linked to C indirectly via the object B. Similarly the object E is linked to C indirectly via the object D.
