System Architecture

ALVAO Monitoring consists of 5 components:

  1. Monitoring Agent – a service running on the monitored computer and logging all activities of all users that are currently logged in. The records of these activities are periodically sent to the Monitoring WebService.
  2. Monitoring WebService – a web-based service which stores data received from the Agents
  3. Monitoring Server – a service running on the server. It processes the files saved by Monitoring WebService and saves all information into the ALVAO database.
  4. Monitoring Portal – a web-based application which displays the information about the user activity stored in the ALVAO database
  5. Asset Management Collector – a service which does not participate directly in data processing, but updates the Software Products Library. ALVAO Monitoring uses this library to match applications with active windows. Asset Management Collector also sends information about unrecognized applications.

Communication

The Monitoring Agent is continuously monitoring the activity of all users on the computer where it is running. This information is compressed and sent to Monitoring WebService periodically. Before sending data, the Web service will check if the computer from which the data originate, already exists. If it does not exist, the Web service will create the corresponding computer in the ALVAO database.

The Web service will save the Agent data to a specified folder. The Monitoring Server scans this folder regularly to process all files stored there. Once processed, the activity records become immediately available on the Monitoring Portal.
