AM Agent - Auto-update: Update or uninstall with the enabled system policy 'DisableAutomaticApplicationShutdown'

This article is about product releases

ALVAO Discovery Agent 10.0 and higher

Symptoms

The agent cannot be updated manually or automatically, nor can it be uninstalled. During these actions, the user will see either 'Files in use' or 'The following applications should be closed before continuing the installation' dialogs.

Cause

The cause is the system policy 'DisableAutomaticApplicationShutdown' being set to 1. This value is set in the registry under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Installer
This setting prevents any MSI from stopping applications and services from running automatically during installation/upgrades.

Solution

-

Workaround

Either set the 'DisableAutomaticApplicationShutdown' value to 0, or manually stop the 'ALVAO Asset Management Agent xx.x.xxx' service.

Steps to reproduce this behavior

Create a new DWORD value called 'DisableAutomaticApplicationShutdown' in the registry under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Installer and set it to 1.
