Glossary

  • Agent – the Agent is an application (Win9x) or a service (NT, 2000, XP, Vista, 7) running on a client computer that enables the remote collection of data, installation of software packages and the communication with ALVAO Asset Management.
  • Inheritance – see Inherited property.
  • Uniqueness – a property can be set to be unique. If the uniqueness feature is enabled, you can use the Check for duplicities feature. This feature will find any duplicate properties with the same value and returns a list of uniqueness violations for all properties defined to be unique.
  • Classifying property – a property that determines the object type, e.g. "monitor", "CPU", "room" etc. Each object must contain at least one classifying property. The Kind property is used as the classifying property by default.
  • Tree root

    An object located in the tree root, i.e. an object with no parent object.

  • Parent object
  • Object – an object is the basic building block of the system database. Each object represents one node in the tree.
    An object can consist of the following items:
    • Object name
    • icons
    • Properties
    • Notes
    • History records
    • child objects
  • Root object – see tree root.
  • Child object
  • Subtree

    A part of the tree that includes one certain object (subtree root), its child objects, child objects of child objects etc.
  • Object child – one of the child objects or one of the child objects of a child object etc.
  • Object parent – a parent object, a parent object of a parent object etc.
  • Tree

    A hierarchic structure consisting of objects. Each object can have one or more child objects (descendants) and, at the same time, be a child object of another object (parent object).
  • Object template – a template used to create new objects.
  • Property – information that describes certain object characteristics. Each object can be described with several properties, such as Size, Color etc.
  • Native property – a property that is a part of an object (is not inherited).
  • Inherited property

    A property that is inherited to the object from one of its parent objects.
  • WMI – Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) is a system information management tool based on a standardized, object-oriented interface.
  • Tab – the bottom parts of the Properties and History windows include several tabs that can be used as a filter.
