Object templates

On this page, you can manage object templates.

It contains similar controls as the Objects page, only it displays object templates instead of actual objects.

What are object templates

Object templates are templates for creating new objects. When a new object is inserted in the tree on the Objects page, it is created by copying a particular object template.

Each object template consists of the following elements:

  1. Object type - corresponds to type of the real-world object the object represents, e.g., computer, monitor, printer, user, department, etc.

An object type may have multiple object templates, e.g., in the case of monitor object type, a template for each monitor model may be defined.

With each object type, just one object icon is associated so all objects of the same type have the same icon displayed in the object tree. See Edit - Object type - Edit object type - Icon field. To display two different icons you need to have defined two different object types.

  2. Set of object properties

Each object property contains a certain value describing the object. E.g., an object of type User may have properties like Personal number, Work position, etc. You can define available object properties on the Administration - Asset Management - Property definitions page. One object can have at most one property defined by one property definition, e.g., a user can't have two or more Work position properties.

  3. Object name - is automatically composed of values of selected object properties according to an object name template. For each object type, just one object name template can be defined, see Edit - Object type - Edit object type - Object name template field.
