Installation

This chapter describes the workflow to install the system for the first time. If you want to upgrade the system from a legacy version, please follow the procedure described in the chapter Upgrade.

ALVAO Server

The ALVAO Server Setup installation program ensures standard installation of server-based ALVAO system components on a single server. Please refer to Manual Installation if you are using a non-standard installation on multiple servers.

  1. Make sure the following is installed on the server:
    • IIS Intranet Server. If you are using IIS version 7, you need the IIS 6 Compatibility Pack.
    • ASP.NET v4.0 or later.
  2. Make sure you have the necessary permissions for IIS processes set on the SQL server. Recommended are the following user roles for reading, data editing, and editing of database schemes: db_datareader, db_datawriter, db_ddladmin.
  3. Set the permissions for users launching ALVAO Server Setup. The recommended roles are db_datareader, db_datawriter, db_ddladmin. Use the SQL command GRANT ALTER ANY USER TO [user login] to set the remaining necessary permission.
  4. Go to the ALVAO Downloads page and download ALVAO Server Setup.
  5. Launch the AlvaoServerSetup.msi installation file on the server and follow the instructions in the Installation Wizard.
  6. Restart the IIS server.
Note:
In SQL Server Management Studio (Express), roles can be set in the Security – Logins folder.
The sysadmin role ensures the setting of all necessary user permissions without having to set any other roles.
Note:
The entered activation key is authenticated over the Internet.

ALVAO Asset Management Console

Installation Instructions

  1. Launch the AlvaoAssetConsole.msi installation service on the system user's machine and follow the instructions of the Installation Wizard.

Connecting to Existing Database

  1. Once the installation has been completed, run the application from the Windows Start – ALVAO – Asset Management Console menu.
  2. The Database administrator window will open. In this window, please click the Add different... button.
  3. Select the option Open existing database – Other (SQL Server, MSDE) and click the Next button.
  4. Select Microsoft OLE DB Provider for SQL and click the Next button.
  5. Enter the database server name. Select the SQL server authorization method you want to use. Select the required database from the list and click OK.
  6. An entry with the selected database will be created in the Database administrator window. Click the Open button to open this database.
Note:
The installation package contains also the Collector and Agent. These components are optional. In standard installation environments it is not necessary to install these components along with the Console, as the Collector is usually installed on a server and the Agents are installed using the Group Policy, if necessary.
Note:
If the console stops running after being launched, make sure it is not affected by the antivirus solution on the end station, and if this is the case, add an exception for the console.
Tip:
If the console is used by multiple users, we recommend using Group Policy for bulk installation. You can also install the console on a shared server-based drive and enable users to launch the console from this shared drive. Please note however, that we cannot guarantee correct functionality for server-based installations (especially if computers switch to the sleeping mode). The recommended scenario is local installation.
