Multi-Language Environment
In a multi-language environment, we recommend selecting English, which is usually used as the language of communication across all teams, as the ALVAO system language. All setting items, such as service names and descriptions in the Service Catalog, should be then defined in English. Some items can be further translated to other languages. The following values can be translated:
- Service
- Service name
- Description of service
- Service keywords
- SLA
- Process
- Process name
- Status name
- Status description
- Instructions for solver
- Message template for approvers
- Priority
- Priority name (high, medium, ...)
- Links Between Requests
- Custom request items
- Item name
- Item description
- Values in the value list for int and nvarchar type items
Note: Translations of lists of values of custom items are disabled by default. You can enable them by selecting Enable translation for each custom item.

Translation
- Go to the ALVAO WebApp and select the Management – Settings – Languages command.
- On the Languages page, select Download the workbook for translation and specify the name of the file to which the translation data should be saved. The saved file is an XML file.
- Open the file in Microsoft Excel.
- Each table row corresponds to one item being translated. The value column contains the original text in English (or in the ALVAO system language). Write the translations in the columns for the selected preferred languages.
Tip: The fields to be filled in with translated text are displayed with a colored background. The required task is also described in the To Do column for each preferred language. The columns may contain the following values:
- translate – the text is to be translated.
- update translation – the existing translation has to be updated as the original text in the value column has been changed since the last translation.
- - (en-dash) – a translation already exists and is up-to-date.
- After finishing the translation in Microsoft Excel, save the file again as XML.
- Go to the ALVAO WebApp, select the Management – Settings – Languages command again and use the Upload translations command to load the file.
Tip: If individual languages are translated by different translators, only send a table containing the relevant preferred languages to each of the translators. Other preferred languages should be deleted before the table is sent. When a table edited in this way is imported to ALVAO, only the translations to languages contained in the file are loaded. Do not delete the first 4 columns. They are there to identify the text to be translated.
Note: The types of items being translated (e.g. service name, SLA name, etc.) can be determined according to the values in the table and attribute columns containing the names of the database table and column where the text is saved.
Notification: The settings of views in tables usually contain filters that are dependent on the user’s preferred language. If you add a translation, the filters may stop working properly and will have to be set again in the corresponding preferred language.
